Powder, not aerosol. Shake a little onto your roots, work it in, brush it out, and second-day hair goes another day. Arrowroot and kaolin clay do the absorbing. The tint is what makes it disappear: raw cacao in SLAY for dark hair, chamomile flower in VIBE for blonde. Pick the one that matches your color and it vanishes instead of sitting there gray. 1.5 oz in a paperboard shaker, handcrafted in small batches up in the Santa Cruz mountains. Five ingredients each, most of them organic.

Ingredients:

SLAY, for dark hair: Arrowroot (Maranta arundinacea), organic - absorbs oil at the root without weighing hair down; Kaolin Clay - pulls grease and buildup off the scalp; Raw Cacao Powder (Theobroma cacao), organic - tints the powder so it disappears into dark hair, and brings antioxidants with it; Geranium Oil (Pelargonium graveolens), organic - balances the scalp and adds shine; Ho Wood Oil (Cinnamomum camphora), organic - soft woody note that rounds out the cacao. VIBE, for light hair: Arrowroot (Maranta arundinacea), organic - same oil-absorbing base; Kaolin Clay - pulls grease and buildup off the scalp; Chamomile Flower Powder (Matricaria chamomilla), organic - tints pale so it disappears into blonde, and calms an irritated scalp; Bergamot Peel Oil, bergaptene-free (Citrus bergamia), organic - bright citrus scent without the photosensitivity that regular bergamot brings; Lavender Oil (Lavandula angustifolia), organic - soothing, and it keeps the citrus from going sharp.

How to use:

Shake a small amount onto dry roots, or into clean hands and then onto your roots. Flip your head over so you get underneath too. Work it in from roots to tips, let it sit a minute, then brush the excess out and style. Start with less than you think you need, you can always add more. Store the shaker somewhere dry, since paperboard and a steamy shower are not friends.

Verdant Wild is Liz Hodges, who started the line in 2015 and still handcrafts everything in small batches in the Santa Cruz mountains. She forages and sources organic and fair trade ingredients from local businesses and transparent US companies, packs in glass, metal, or biodegradable containers, and the whole line is PETA certified cruelty-free.

End Life:

The shaker is 100% paperboard with a kraft top and bottom, so when it's empty you tear it down and compost it or drop it in the paper recycling. Whatever powder is stuck in the bottom can go in the compost too. The closure is plastic-free, so there's no liner or sleeve to pick out first.
